For Your Valentine: Not Dinner, Not a Hotel, Not a Show - 2009

  1. Fall in love all over again this Valentine’s Day while indulging in Tammie Coe Cakes romantic creations. Tammie Coe’s Valentine’s menu consists of cakes, cupcakes and cookie that are delicious as well as an artistic experience, using beautiful red, pink, white and chocolate colors in creative designs. The signature Sinsational cake is made with dark chocolate flourless cake and topped with candied red and pink hearts. Tammie Coe’s itty bitty lover’s cake is made from vanilla sponge cake, passion fruit custard and is covered in a red and pink striped fondant. The special Valentine’s Day menu also includes chocolate triple dipped strawberries made with white, dark and milk chocolate, a set of nine mini Ooey Gooey cupcakes made with pink butter cream and white chocolate sprinkles and the sweetheart cookie collection.

  2. Experience the Chocolate Valentine’s Tea at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. Poured every Thursday, Friday and Saturday throughout February in the Tea Lounge from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., it features special chocolate desserts. Biltmore Grand Chocolate Valentine’s Tea is $36; Biltmore Royal Chocolate Valentine’s Tea, with Kir Royal or Mimosa, is $46. Tax and gratuity not included.

  3. The Cabana Club Romance Experience at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa is available every day in February for $350, this full-day (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) romantic and relaxing experience for two is set in a private poolside cabana and combines a bottle of champagne, picnic lunch for two, half-a-dozen chocolate-dipped strawberries, and a box of house-made chocolates. Tax and gratuity not included.

  4. Celebrating a quiet Valentine's Day at home? Meet her at the door with a Chocolate Covered Strawberry Martini, recipe compliments of Eddie V's in Scottsdale. I know, the recipe doesn't say how to make a chocolate covered strawberry! You'll have to buy those at one of our local chocolate shops.

  5. Treat your Valentine to The Dark Chocolate Raspberry Fondue manicure and pedicure treatment at Suddenly Slimmer Day Spa in Phoenix. This indulgent treatment starts off with a dark chocolate fondue mask for the hands and feet using Hungarian Moor mud, cocoa powder and chocolate raspberry oil. A scrub containing Brittany Coast French sea salt and chocolate raspberry oil is used to exfoliate dead skin cells on hands and feet, followed by a sea salt and dark raspberry soak to further soften the skin. The final step involves an invigorating massage of hands and feet with whipped dark chocolate raspberry shea butter. Then, nails will be painted with ESSIE Chocolate Kisses, a rich, sexy brown that will remind your Valentine of the spa experience long after. If your sweetheart also wants to try a special Valentine's facial, there's one on the menu this month. A chocolate-infused facial called "Chocolate Antioxidant" using products rich in cacao crodarom, a concentrated extract from unroasted beans, gives protection from cell damage and helps minimize fine lines and wrinkles and leaves the skin feeling soft and moisturized.

  6. Romance your sweetie on Valentine's Day with a Chocolate Kiss Martini. This recipe is from Lon's at the Hermosa in Paradise Valley.

  7. The East Valley Lamplighter's Barbershop Chorus and Quartets Singing Valentines help you say "I love you!" They will deliver singing valentines across the East Valley, from Ahwatukee to Apache Junction, all day February 13 & 14, 2009. Two songs, a rose, candy and a card for $40. Different dates, special requests and extra songs are negotiable. Order by phone at 480-615-7464(SING) or 480-703-1011. Proceeds support the non-profit chorus.

  8. Avoid the February 14th crowds and take your Valentine to Roka Akor in Scottsdale on the following Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 3 to 5 p.m. for Robata Grill 101, a two-hour master cooking class. Learn how to prepare Robata grill cuisine at Scottsdale’s stylish and relaxed Japanese restaurant and grill. Robata, Japanese for “cooking with open flames,” allows you to cook traditional cuisine on a multi-tiered grill over oak charcoal which enhances natural flavors. In this class, you will learn how to mix marinades, prepare meat, fish and vegetables from the menu, including Dry Aged Bone-In Ribeye, on the Robata grill. Roka Akor’s signature shochu infusions, created in house using fresh, organic ingredients, will also be offered. You’ll be able to sample everything and take home recipes of the dishes you prepared. Reservations required. $60 per person.
