Our U.S. congressional representatives are never put in office by 100% of the electorate, but still, they represent all of us. Whether Democrat, Republican, Green, Libertarian or any other party or no party at all, it would not be possible for our Senators and District Representatives to make all of us happy all the time.

One of the features of our form of government is that we have the right to tell our elected representatives how we feel they should vote on the issues of the day. We probably don't have all the information that they have, for I seriously doubt that a 60-second sound byte on a local news program explains all the intricacies of each bill put before Congress. Even so, we may want to let our elected officials in Washington know when we support a particular position, or when we disagree with the way they have represented Arizona on an issue.

If you contact a U.S. Senator or U.S. Representative from Arizona, I recommend that you:

  • Be willing to identify yourself, including name, mailing address, email address and phone number.
  • State your position clearly, citing examples or resources for your information.
  • Avoid insults, profanity or other inappropriate commentary.

Keep in mind that when you contact either of the Senators mentioned below, you will probably be interfacing with a member of his staff. If they answered the phone or personally responded to all the letters and comments they receive, they'd never have time to do the work for which we elected them!
