Arizona Department of Transportation ("ADOT") operates a Traffic Operations Center ("TOC") in Phoenix. The heart of that command center is "ITS" or Intelligent Transportation Systems. The ITS state-of-the-art computer systems, operating in conjunction with road sensor systems and various communications mechanisms, allow ADOT to provide both information and assistance to people driving in our state.

While ADOT monitors many roadways in the state over which it has jurisdiction, including Tucson and rural areas, the activities of the TOC are critical in the metro Phoenix area, where unparalleled growth has occurred over the past few decades.

As anyone who drives here in rush hour can tell you, congestion is a major issue on our roads. Accidents, disabled vehicles, construction, debris or people on the freeways all add time and frustration to our travels. We lose time, use gas, have more accidents and increase polluting emissions when our freeways are overly congested.

The TOC, then, has adopted a mission that includes keeping traffic moving, improving response times in emergencies, and providing timely information to motorists. It's a 24/7 effort. By doing those things, they hope to make the Phoenix area freeways safer, reduce congestion, and save fuel.
