If you are reading this in October, November or December, it's too late to get a permit to cut down your own live Christmas tree for this year. In Arizona, we have a lottery system for those permits, and you absolutely have to have a permit to cut down a tree in one of our national forests.
The other option if your heart is set on a real tree is to buy one from a Christmas tree farm. Those temporary lots will be springing up all over the Phoenix area. Of course, you can never find one when you need one, so here are some lot locations.

Moon Valley Nursery
Locations in Anthem, Surprise, Peoria, Avondale, Phoenix, Chandler, mesa, Scottsdale. Open in the daytime only. They also usually have living Christmas trees that can be replanted after the holidays. Call first and ask.
Mast-Roth Farms
