I don't especially like surprises when I am out and about attending events, so if you are anything like me in this regard, here are a few tips and items of interest that you might want to know before you pack everyone up in your vehicle to go to the Arizona Home and Building Expo.
Arizona Home and Building Expo Tips
- Be prepared that unless you are incredibly lucky, you won't find a parking spot on the street near the Phoenix Convention Center within a few blocks. Sure, you might pay around $10 to park in a garage, but at least it's covered parking, and hopefully you're getting in for free anyway (see #10 below).
- This show is slightly different than the various types of home and garden shows that we have during the rest of the year. Although you'll find an occasional skin care or cleaning product here and there, most of the exhibitors are truly in the home improvement and home decor category.
- If you have a project in mind for your house or yard, bring the details with you so you can have fruitful discussions with vendors. Bring measurements, color swatches, or whatever you need to narrow down the products and vendors to those that meet your needs and allows them to quote prices. It will save you a lot of time!
- Carry a pen with you (or pick up a freebie at the show). When you collect brochures and business cards, write yourself a note about what made that product or service special, so can remember later why you wanted to look into it further. There's nothing worse than getting home, spreading out 14 brochures on the table, and not knowing which one was which. I speak from experience here!
- You'll be able to sign up for lots of contests. If you do, assume that you'll get a call down the road offering to sell you some product or service. Since you give them your information, they can call even if you are on the Do Not Call Registry.
- You can get sandwiches, hot dogs, snacks and soft drinks right on the premises, and the prices are reasonable.
- Don't worry about knowing which ballrooms you'll be looking for--when you enter the Phoenix Convention Center (west side of the South Building) you'll be there.
- Check the schedule for the topics covered in the free workshops. By the way, those seats are metal bleachers, and not very comfortable.
- There isn't much for children to do here, but if you bring them, look for the pest control services. They usually bring some ugly critters with them.
- Tickets to the Arizona Home and Building Expo are very reasonably priced, but if you are sharp you can often scoop up coupons or even free tickets by checking online in advance of the show, or in the local newspaper a few days before the show.
