Circle K New Year’s Eve Block Party - 2013

A Family-Friendly Block Party to Celebrate the Coming Year

By

nyeblockparty.jpg

In years past, the Fiesta Bowl organization held a huge block party in downtown Tempe on New Year's Eve. The Fiesta Bowl Block Party was one of the biggest block parties in the country. The last one was in 2011. Instead, the official Fiesta Bowl party will celebrate the game itself, with a tailgating party on the same day as the college football game.

In  2012 a "lighter" version of the block party took place while organizer looked for a new sponsor. Now, on December 31, 2013, the full New Year's Eve Block Party is back in full force.

When is Mill Avenue's New Year's Eve Block Party?

Well, of course it is on December 31st. The activities begin at 6 p.m.

Where is it?

The Mill Avenue District is in Downtown Tempe. Here is a map with directions, including information on METRO Light Rail.

How do I get tickets and how much are they?

This used to be a free admission event, but now tickets are required. If purchased at a Circle K store, $20 per ticket through December 1, 2013 and $25 per ticket from December 2 - December 29, 2013. Additional discounts may be received for purchasing certain products (Budweiser, Red Bull, Pepsi, Frito Lay) at the same time as your tickets. Tickets may also be purchased online.

What happens?

There will be interactive games and activities and musical entertainment -- ten bands, three dance floors. Gourmet food trucks will have a variety of eats available for purchase. Take advantage of beer and champagne gardens and Video Dance stages at the intersections of 5th and Mill and 6th and Mill. For guests with young children, the Family Fun Zone with Radio Disney will be located just west of Mill Avenue on Seventh street. It will will be open until 9 p.m. when an early fireworks display will take place for the younger crowd.

Arizona’s Biggest New Year’s Eve Kiss happens at midnight, with 10,000 Hershey’s Kisses, fireworks and confetti cannons.

It's an outdoor party? What is the weather like?

Here are some weather statistics and tips that time of year.

Will public transportation be running after midnight?

Yes!

Thanks to a sponsor, Coors Light, all buses and METRO Light Rail rides will be free starting at 7 p.m. on December 31, 2013 and ending at 2 a.m. More Info.

Six bus and five Orbit routes serving Mill Avenue will be running until 2 a.m. from the Transportation Center at Fifth and College within Tempe according to regular weekday schedules. Orbit is free and fares are $2 each trip for the bus. Most of Tempe’s bus and Orbit routes connect with the nine METRO light rail stations in Tempe. Residents can park at one of the designated METRO light rail park-and-ride locations and ride the train until 2 a.m. The following bus routes will provide service from the Tempe Transportation Center from midnight to 2 a.m. (Jan. 1):

  • Route 48 – Southbound to Arizona Mills Mall
  • Route 62 – Southbound to Price & Guadalupe
  • Route 62 – Northbound to Tempe Marketplace
  • Route 65 – Southbound to Priest & Warner
  • Route 66 – Southbound to Kyrene & Warner
  • Route 72 – Southbound to Rural & Ray
  • Orbit Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and Venus

Post-event bus service is only available within the City of Tempe. People traveling to other cities should plan accordingly and check schedules.

I don't want to take public transportation. Is there anywhere to park?

Try one of the following lots:
  • Hayden Square Garage and West Lot at Third Street and Ash Avenue
  • US Airway Garage at Ash Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway
  • University Square on University Drive and Forest Avenue
  • Hayden Ferry Garage on Rio Salado Parkway just east of Mill Avenue
  • Lot 59 on ASU campus on Rio Salado Parkway just west of Rural Road
  • Rio Salado Parkway lots east of Priest Drive
  • Centerpoint Garage on Ash Avenue north of University Drive
  • Sixth Street and College Avenue lot

Be prepared to pay up to $20 or more when parking in one of these lots for an event. Cash is easiest. Also, be aware that there are traffic restrictions on New Year's Eve. 7th Street between Maple and Ash avenues will be closed from midnight Dec. 31 to 6 a.m. Jan. 1; 6th Street between Maple and Ash avenues will be closed from midnight Dec. 31 to 6 a.m. Jan 1.

I'm coming from out of town -- where should I stay?

Here are some recommended hotels in Tempe. You might also want to stay at a hotel that's on the METRO Light rail line, so you don't have to drive.
