The Bottom Line

The most expensive item on the dinner menu at Haus Murphy's is $17, and there are plenty of offerings between $11 and $14. A German sausage plate, such as bratwurst or knackwurst, costs $9. Haus Murphy's isn't a pretentious dining experience--don't expect your dishes to match!

Pros

  • Pleasant outdoor eating area
  • Portions are appropriate; not too big

Guide Review - Haus Murphy's German Restaurant

Haus Murphy's is an independent, one-of-a-kind restaurant located in downtown Glendale, Arizona. It can accommodate quite a few people, and there is outdoor seating resembling a beer garden. Unlike many outdoor patios in the Phoenix area, at this one you aren't sitting looking at parking lot or traffic, since the outdoor area is on the side of the building, not the front. Good choice!

Meat and potatoes. That's what German restaurants serve. Haus Murphy's offers schnitzel (pork loin), standard specialties like sauerbraten and beef roulade, sausages, and some salads (mostly with meat). Most entries come with some variety of potatoes, and some variety of cabbage.

We tried a sausage sampler as an appetizer. It is comprised of two sausages of your choice, cut up, over either fried potatoes or sauerkraut. For our entrees, we ordered Gulasch with sauerkraut and spaetzle ($14), Kraut Rouladen with potatoes, which is a cabbage roll filled with a por/beef combo ($15) and a Holsteiner Schnitzel with fried potatoes ($14), which comes with a fried egg and anchovies on top. OK, I know--I'm one of only 37 people in all of Greater Phoenix who likes anchovies!

The soup that comes with the meal and the bread serves the purpose of killing some time until the real stuff arrives. The sausage sampler was fine, but the entrees shined. All of them. As much fried food is served here, we didn't find any of it greasy or heavy.

For dessert, bread pudding won our prize and comes in two sizes. The apple strudel was quite a disappointment. Not a strudel at all, but really a coffee cake with very little vanilla sauce.

I wouldn't eat this type of food very often, but the rating I gave it reflects that Haus Murphy's delivers what they are known for--good German food at reasonable prices.
