The Bottom Line

Two of us enjoyed an appetizer, one soup, one salad, two entrées, two side dishes and two desserts at Mastro's Ocean Club in the Kierland area of Scottsdale. That is a great deal of food, and we took home enough for another meal! Excluding beverages, tax and tip the total bill came to about $81 per person.

Pros

  • Flavorful food, well-prepared
  • Substantial quantities of food
  • Large, inviting lounge with live music

Cons

  • No doubt about it, it's expensive
  • Menu not especially descriptive

Description

  • Mastro's Ocean Club is located in Scottsdale, at Kierland Commons.
  • Mastro's Ocean Club is appropriate for a business dinner, romantic meal, or couples night out. It is not a chain restaurant.
  • Mastro's Ocean Club is open for dinner every evening. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends.
  • The "O" Bar has a club feel with live music, typically a single singer/musician presenting oldies and popular favorites.
  • Dress is neat/casual, resort wear or business attire.
  • Leave the kids at home when you go to Mastro's Ocean Club.

Guide Review - Mastro's Ocean Club

If you are looking for a fine dining experience where fresh seafood is the star, then Mastro's Ocean Club in Scottsdale is one of your best options in town.

For people who love starters, this part of the menu is hard to beat. I have been known to concentrate entirely on soups, salads and appetizers for a meal, and that could easily be done here. We finally settled on the Lobster Bisque ($11), the Ocean Club Iceberg Wedge ($10) and the Dungeness Crab Cocktail ($21). A fantastic combination!

Our main course consisted of huge Sautéed Sea Scallops ($32) in a zesty sauce, melt-in-your-mouth wonderful Swordfish ($33), a side of Lobster Mashed Potatoes ($33) incorporating the meat from a 1-1/4 lb. lobster, and Sautéed Spinach ($9). On a return visit, it would be difficult for us to not exactly repeat this road map for a wonderful meal.

The menu at Mastro's Ocean Club does not provide descriptions, so don't be shy about asking your server how items are prepared and presented. When it comes to dessert, the list didn't inspire, so our server helped us decide on the Chocolate Temptation Cake ($8) -- light on cake but plenty of rich chocolate -- and Mastro's signature Warm Butter Cake ($10), more than enough for two people and served with a bowl of fresh whipped cream, just in case the warm, sweet cake, ice cream and fresh fruit aren't quite enough for you.

We left Mastro's Ocean Club with smiles on our faces. I highly recommend a visit, as long as your wallet or expense account can handle it.
