Rocky Point

Review of Rocky Point (Puerto Peņasco)

By Judy Hedding, About.com

Rocky Point, Mexico--or Puerto Peñasco--is a favorite destination for many Phoenix area residents, because it is the closest beach we have. Rocky Point is also very popular during Spring Break, so if you are considering a visit, take that into account. If you aren't a student traveling with your friends, Spring Break is a great time to avoid going to Rocky Point!

I've been going down to Rocky Point for over 30 years and I absolutely love it! Much has changed in those past 30 years, some for the good, some not so good. The commercialization of the area is bringing more business and money to the state of Sonora but I don't really see the poverty of the locals getting any better. There are many new condo's on Sandy Beach, some very nice and even one with a new Jack Nickalaus signature golf course.

I grew up in AZ but have lived in the Seattle, WA., area for the past 21 years (hence the nickname above) but, I make sure that I take a minimum of 2 trips a year down to R.P. and that is during April and October. Those are the best weather months of the year to be down there.

I'm the kind of guy that likes to hit the town at night and do some dancing. Manny's is always a lot of fun. Plenty of people, dancing and good drinks. Pink Cadillac is similar but a smaller dance floor and they allow bodyshots on the ladies. My overall favorite is Margaritavilla. They just reopened that place late last year. The bartender Jose (typical name) is a great guy and after a couple of visits will call you by name and have your drink ready for you before you even sit-down.

I guess what would be better for me is if I had a way to fly direct into R.P. and rent a car at that little aeropuerto just before town. Unfortunately, I have to fly into Phoenix and then take a rental car down. Either way, it is worth it the trip!
