Salt River Project Scam
How to Recognize and Avoid the SRP Scam

By Judy Hedding, About.com

Salt River Project, one of the local utility companies, has the following information at its web site:

Salt River Project electricity customers are being warned of a phone scam in which thieves are impersonating SRP employees in an effort to steal credit card and debit card numbers.

These imposters, according to Mike Lowe, manager of Customer Services/Power, have told SRP customers that full payment to SRP is required by credit or debit card. They are threatening customers with termination of electric service without immediate payment of the balance due.

"SRP customers inquiring about these types of calls need to know that SRP does not directly accept credit card or debit card payments, nor do we request credit or debit card account numbers," said Lowe. "Also, we do not call residential customers requesting payment of outstanding balances."

To avoid becoming a victim of a similar scam, SRP urges customers to:

  • Not give credit or debit card numbers or other personal information to any caller without knowing their true identity.
  • Call SRP at (602) 236-8888 for accurate information about their electric account and to obtain SRP employee identification and program information.
  • Contact the local police if they receive a similar call from a scam artist.
