There are many people in the Phoenix area who don't think twice about spending $50 or $60 on a haircut and style, but unfortunately there are just as many who have a hard time fitting haircuts into their budget at all. Everyone wants to look nice, and to have their kids well-groomed--it also helps improve self-esteem to look your best.

If forking over $20 or $30 or more for a haircut just isn't possible for you, there are some places around town where you can get a cut or a cut and style for a very reasonable price. Salon and barber schools have students that must practice what they are learning, and they depend on the public to give them the opportunity to perfect their skills. Most of them don't require appointments, and simple haircuts may cost anywhere from nothing (free!) to $10 or $15. Other services, like shampoos, special styles, and hair coloring are also available at prices that may be significantly less than regular salon pricing. Understand, though, that these are students--they'll do their best, but quality of the cuts may vary.

Free haircuts are available Monday through Friday at St. Vincent de Paul. Arizona barbers donate their time to provide haircuts for homeless people. This service is usually offered in the early part of the day. Call 602-266-HOPE for more information.

A note about tipping: the barbers and stylists at the schools mentioned above appreciate tips. If you are happy with the service provided, and you can afford to do so, I recommend bringing along a little extra money to show your appreciation for hard-working students.
