I was impressed with this trail ride on many levels. The staff was friendly and attentive. The horses and the facilities were clean and attractive. So much more interesting that many other trail rides in the lower desert, this ride offers views of Saguaro Lake, gorgeous mountains and the huge saguaros of the Tonto National Forest. The ride is enhanced by the climbs and descents, as well as the river crossing, where the water was running fairly high and swiftly after recent rains. If you have the chance to go when the desert is in bloom (usually during the month of March) so much the better!
Commentary during the trail ride was light, since everyone on the ride in which I participated lived in the area. Tidbits about flora, fauna and local history are offered, and your guides are willing and able to answer questions about the desert, national forest, Saguaro Lake and the Salt River.
Of all the trail rides I have taken, this wasn't the easiest (rocky paths and steep areas) but it was by far the most pleasant. I had total faith in my horse, and I was able to relax and enjoy the ride. It doesn't take long to get here from most parts of the Phoenix area, but it seems like a hundred miles away from city life.
