HoHoKam Park in Mesa Arizona

The Chicago Cubs play their home games during Cactus League baseball at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona. HoHoKam Park, as it is often called, is probably the busiest park when Spring Training baseball is going on--sellouts are not uncommon, even though the stadium can accommodate nearly 13,000 fans.

In the fall, the Mesa Solar Sox play here for Arizona Fall League Baseball.

These photos will help you get a feel for HoHoKam Park before you buy your tickets and plan your day at the ballpark.

HoHoKam Park Tips

These comments are based on my visit in March 2008.
  1. HoHoKam Stadium charges for parking. About an hour before game time the parking lot adjacent to the stadium was full. Handicapped parking was full. Fans in Mesa tend to get to the games very early. This is really the only stadium where I see tailgating, which is made appealing to fans by virtue of the fact that much of the parking lot is on grass.
  2. There are bleachers, with backs on them, down both the first and third base lines, upper level.
  3. HoHoKam Stadium attracts a somewhat older crowd, in general. These are die-hard Cubs fans, and I would venture to say that aside from Diamondbacks games you'll see the most home team caps, shorts, bags, flip flops and other accessories at HoHoKam Park.
  4. There is a large berm area (grass seating) here. Small electronic scoreboards are visible from the berm. You'll have the sun in your eyes, so wear sunglasses!
  5. The numbers on the main scoreboard are not easy to see on a sunny day.
  6. The concourse will lead fans seated in the lower level down toward the field. Most of the second level will always have shade. The upper rows of the lower level will get shade during the second half of the game, but only the seats behind home plate and on the third base side. Everyone else on the lower level infield, and everyone in all outfield sections will have full sun.
  7. Unlike a few other stadiums, the first row of the second level at HoHoKam Stadium is elevated enough so people walking there won't obstruct your view. Actually, they tend to let people stand on that walkway between the lower and upper levels.
  8. Aside from far left and right field, and the berm, you can't see the action from the concession area.
  9. Best concessions: Foot long hot dogs (from the outdoor grills, not the inside concession booths), Asian noodles and Italian ices. There are very few picnic tables or chairs in the concession area.
  10. There are no cup holders at HoHoKam Park. Very awkward, especially when soft drink lids are almost never available any more. What? No souvenir cups?? They had them in 2007....
