Uniforms Can Be Tough To Differentiate During Spring Training

© Judy Hedding

I have been to many Cactus League baseball games in both the Phoenix area and in Tucson. Since I write quite about Spring Training, our stadiums and what it's like to attend exhibition baseball in Arizona in March, I spend a good part of my time at the games listening to people. I listen to what they talk about and the questions they have. Here's one that I often am asked.

Major League Baseball establishes guidelines for uniforms for Spring Training Baseball, but few hard and fast rules. The jerseys that teams wear for Cactus League games might not be the same official jerseys as they use for the regular season. Additionally, even though there are definitely home teams and away teams at Cactus League games, it is usually not possible to tell that from their jerseys. In fact, it can and does happen that both teams wear the same color jersey. For example, in the picture shown here both the Mariners and the Brewers are wearing dark blue jerseys. That's not very fan friendly!

So, how do you tell which is which team if you can't read their shirts? Take a look at their pants. The home team will wear white pants, and the visiting team will wear gray pants.

Everything you need to know to get in on Cactus League action -- team schedules, tickets, stadium information, maps, team gear, photos -- can be found in the Arizona Spring Training, Cactus League Guide.
