The Largest Cities in Arizona - 2010
There are 10 cities in Arizona with a population over 100,000. They are, in order with largest first: Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, Chandler, Glendale, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Tempe, Peoria, Surprise. Nine of the ten are located in Maricopa County. Tucson is in Pima County.
White population
Scottsdale leads the ten cities in white population with 89%. Peoria, Gilbert, and Surprise are next with 82%. The lowest white population is in Phoenix with 66%, followed by Glendale with 68%.
African American population
Approximately 6% of the populations of Phoenix, Glendale and Tempe are African Americans. Scottsdale has the smallest percentage at around 2%. Gilbert, Peoria, and Mesa have slightly over 3% African American population.
American Indian population
Tempe and Tucson have 3% of their population considering themselves American Indian and lead the largest cities in that category. The smallest populations of American Indians are noted in Surprise, Scottsdale and Gilbert with less than 1%.
Asian population
Chandler has the highest percentage of Asian population of the cities with more than 100,000 people with 8%. Gilbert and Tempe both have about 6% Asian people. On the low side, Mesa, Surprise and Tucson all have around 2% Asian population.
Hispanic/Latino
The highest percentage of Hispanic/Latino population is in Tucson at about 42% followed closely by Phoenix at 41%. This is a switch from the 2005 estimate where Phoenix topped the list. Scottsdale (9%) and Gilbert (15%) have the lowest percentage of Hispanic/Latino people living there.
Notable Changes in Population Characteristics Since 2000
- Because Surprise's population increased 280% since 2000, the increases in all categories are significant.
- Gilbert showed the largest growth in white population with 81%. Tempe and Glendale both had reductions in this category between 5% to 7%.
- Again, Gilbert was first in growth in African American population with 165% followed by Chandler and Peoria at 88% and 72% growth, respectively. Tucson had the smallest increase at 23% followed by Glendale at 33% growth.
- Gilbert was first in increased growth of American Indian population at 157% followed by Peoria at 100%. Glendale and Phoenix experienced the lowest increase at 20%.
- Gilbert leads the Asian population growth with 207%. Tucson and Tempe are lowest, both less than 25% growth.
- Gilbert was highest in the Hispanic/Latino growth category with an increase of 139% followed by Peoria at 71% increase. Tucson and Tempe were lowest at less than 25% growth in Hispanic/Latino population.
