Arizona's Largest Cities All Grew in Population

There are 275 cities in the U.S. with a population over 100,000, according to April 2010 U.S. Census data. Ten of them are in Arizona. Many of our cities dropped in rank during the past decade, a result of the recession generally causing people to move outside of urban centers, and possibly as a result of the effect of illegal immigration issues in Arizona causing people to leave. Still, while many cities in the U.S had negative growth over the decade from 2000 to 2010, Arizona's largest cities and towns all grew, albeit at a slower rate than in past decades.

Of those 275 cities:

Phoenix is ranked #6 and grew 9.4% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Tucson is ranked #33 and grew 6.9% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Mesa is ranked #38 and grew 10.8% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Chandler is ranked #80 and grew 33.7% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Glendale is ranked #88 and grew 3.6% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Scottsdale is ranked #92 and grew 7.2% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Gilbert is ranked #101 and grew 90.0% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Tempe is ranked #146 and grew 2.0% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Peoria is ranked #153 and grew 42.2% from July 2000 to April 2010.

Surprise is ranked #216 and grew 281.0% from July 2000 to April 2010.

All data was obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau.
