10 Largest Cities and Towns in Arizona

9 of them are over 100,000 in Population

By Judy Hedding, About.com

The U.S. Census Bureau has released their data estimates on population statistics for the period ending July 1, 2005. The actual census only takes place every ten years, in dates ending in a zero, the the next full census will take place in 2010. Because we continue to experience great population growth in Arizona, it's good to stop midway between census periods to see how we are doing.

Arizona's Largest Cities All Grew in Population

There are 254 cities with a population over 100,000 included in the July 2005 U.S. Census estimates. Nine of them are in Arizona.

Of those 254 cities:

Phoenix is ranked #6 and grew 10.2% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005. There is a general assumption that Phoenix passed into the #5 rank during the 2006 year, since the 5th largest city, Philadelphia, had less than 2,000 more people than Phoenix in July 2005, at the same time it is experiencing a negative growth rate.

Tucson is ranked #32 and grew 5.3% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Mesa is ranked #41 and grew 10.3% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Glendale is ranked #73 and grew 8.5% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Chandler is ranked #75 and grew 30.6% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Scottsdale is ranked #80 and grew 10.7% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Gilbert is ranked #127 and grew 54.6% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Tempe is ranked #139 and grew 1.6% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

Peoria is ranked #169 and grew 24.8% from July 1, 2000 to July 1, 2005.

All data was obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau.
