Goodwill of Central Arizona is a nonprofit organization doing business in the Greater Phoenix area. I posed ten questions to a representative of Goodwill in an effort to familiarize Phoenix area residents with the organization. Here are the responses I received.

What is the name of the organization?

Goodwill of Central Arizona

How long has the organization been operating in the Phoenix area?

Since 1947.

Does the organization serve a particular geographic area?

Maricopa, Yuma, La Paz, Gila and portions of Pinal and Yavapai Counties

Who is most likely to benefit from services provided by the organization?

Anyone facing a barrier to employment such as illiteracy, a disability, welfare dependency or lack of work skills can be helped by Goodwill’s services. We have human services programs that can offer support and training to everyone from at-risk students to teenage parents, from displaced workers looking for new skills to low-income senior needing to re-enter the workforce. The entire community benefits from both Goodwill’s outreach to individuals who need a “hand up,” and the positive economic impact to Arizona’s economy.

Are there requirements or prerequisites for people to access your services?

Most of Goodwill’s services are free and open to the public. Some Goodwill’s 36 programs do have specific requirements concerning income or disability.

Three things about Goodwill of Central Arizona that people might not know.

  1. Goodwill will help over 15,000 youth and adults prepare for and find jobs this year by providing job skills training, education and career center services for individuals with disadvantages including physical, emotional, economic, illiteracy and language barriers. This Mission is carried out through our 36 human services programs including two public charter high schools.
  2. 90 cents of every dollar earned at Goodwill is reinvested into our human services programs and Mission to Put People to Work.
  3. Every year, Goodwill prevents more than 130 million pounds of material from going to into landfills. Good for people, good for the environment.

Any other comments?

Goodwill of Central Arizona is one of the largest and oldest nonprofits in the state of Arizona. We have been strengthening central Arizona’s communities for more than 60 years by offering human services to disadvantaged youth and adults, giving them the necessary tools and skills for a lifetime of sustainability. One person, one community, one day at a time.

More than just a retail store, when people shop at and donate to Goodwill, they are giving their neighbor a “hand up” since all retail revenue funds our programs. Goodwill of Central Arizona is a self-sufficient organization that does not rely on external funding to accomplish its Mission. Through the generous support and donations of Arizonans – we can continue to change lives and give people independence through the power of work.
