My Two And a Half Brushes With Greatness
- I work as a cook at the Hotel Indigo in Old Town Scottsdale. The day before the Pro Bowl, in February of this year (2009), I had a slight brush with greatness. I had a very busy night and, amid the confusion, and to my utter disbelief, I peered out over the masses and saw Brian Urlacher (linebacker for the Chicago Bears-Pro Bowl??) sitting with a couple of his buddies. I waved at him and he smiled and returned the gesture. Before I could act like an idiot fan, he was gone. Around the middle of March, I had the other two celebrity encounters. The first one was James Gandolfini (Tony freakin' Soprano), who kind of stared a hole through me. The second one was Norm MacDonald. He was staying in town at the hotel after doing some stand-up at the Tempe Improv. I had a slow afternoon, so I had the pleasure of talking to him for most of the day, as well as serving him dinner. He was very nice, posed with me for a picture and signed an autograph that said, "Jake, Don't do crack." Nice!

David Copperfield
- David Copperfield was performing at Grady Gammage in Tempe. He selected me to assit with one of his tricks. I was so nervous, I don't even remember what the trick involved...but, he gave me a peck on the cheek and a red rose.
