From the article: Mystery Castle
Many people who live in the Phoenix area have never even heard of Mystery Castle. Just before you get to South Mountain in South Phoenix there is a house -- it's not exactly a mystery and not exactly a castle -- that you can tour. It is very unusual and has a great story.

revisiting
- I got a chance to go to the castle back in 2006 and loved the story. In a couple of weeks I will be going back and taking my brother and his family. I know they are going to love it too

mary lou gulley was an original
- I often wonder why Steven Spielberg, another Phoenix native, never produced a film about Mary Lou Gulley, her mother Fran and the Mystery Castle. When I first met Mary Lou in the late 1970s, she was an opinionated daughter of the desert -- tough, feisty, with a wonderful sense of humor and a sense of history. I was a reporter on the old Phoenix Gazette and wrote some stories about her and her castle. She confided to me that Spielberg had taken an option on doing a movie script about her late father Boyce Luther Gulley, based on Mary Lou's book. As a child, Spielberg had played near the castle and always wanted to do a movie about it, but I guess he must have lost interest. Too bad. This is such a great story with all the drama and human that great stories are supposed to produce. I loved Mary Lou's description of the Westward Ho Hotel's lounge area when she and her mother arrived in Phoenix to claim the castle as their own. She was 16 and good looking, and her mom was no slouch.

Love story
- I visited the castle April-2011 for my Daughter's 30th Birthday! It was the most memorible castle I have ever seen. I loved the love story between a Father and Daughter. I haven't stop tell people about it. In away I also think of it being sad cause her Father never saw her again and to see her face and how she loved the castle. I thank you for allowing me to come and see this wonderful place.

So very eclectic and beautiful,
- I enjoyed my trip to see the castle. Loved the way it is decorated, so fun. All the stuffed people, put in the right places, the art and the dishes. Amazing, the structure was so ahead of his time with sky lights and art. A fun place to go for a visit to phoenix.

Majestic !!
- One of the most memrobile events in any of my travels. I even had the honor of meeting Mary Lou in person and having my picture taken with her. She answered all my many questions of her life in the "castle". In fact she said to me " you sure do ask a lot of questions !" I feel that the "castle " is a MUST SEE !! I came home to Canada & had to tell everyone what an experience to go & see. thnks for letting me share..... Missy Drummond /Brandon Manitoba/Canada

Mystery Castle
- I visited the Mystery Castle twice in the 70's, and still remember the beautiful view from the windows in the kitchen, and especially loved the the "dungeon!" What a unique bit of history.

Miss. Richard
- I too went to tour this awsome home in 1983 or 4 with my father. My english teacher at Marcos de Niza knew Miss Gulley. In fact they were friends, from what I understood. I did a report for class after the tour that Miss. Gulley gave herself. I was just telling my 10 year old about it today when we decide to look it up online. It made me very sad that I did not bring her sooner, when I read that Miss Gulley just pased last month.

Worth the time
- Miss Gulley has passed away now as of early Nov. 2010. I too hope someone recorded or wrote down all those stories. I hope the place stays in good shape and is maintained. It seemed a little unkept in my opinion. Wonderful ingenuity and imagination. It's a shame once Mr. Gulley was cured from his TB that his daughter and wife couldn't have joined him before his death. Go! it's only $5.00.

Hoarding disorder
- Maybe it just isn't my cup of tea. We found it a bit like seeing someone with hoarding issues, seems like he was unable to discard anything, he incorporated everything into his environment. Unique or sad

Mystery Castle - fantastic
- Went there last year. Absolutely loved it. It's so unique and the back story given by the guide is well worth the trip. And I got to meet the owner, lovely woman. Definitely a must see for visitors and residents alike
